The Emergency Shelter Project
After much
anticipation, MCCAA opened the largest
year-round shelter for single men and women on
May 27, 2008. We were able to accomplish the
construction of this 8200 sq. ft. facility
through the voters with Proposition 46 dollars,
the County of Merced, and the City of Merced.
The shelter
holds 60 people and is open from 4pm to 8am, 365
days per year.
Services are
provided on a year-round basis, first come,
first serve. The homeless are assigned beds for
30 day periods for a max. of 150 calendar days
per year. The 1st of every month all
beds become open and if the bed is still needed
the homeless must re-register every month until
their 150 days is exhausted.
Homeless are
not required to have anything to enter the
shelter as no fee is charged and no I.D is
required. Simply self certifying that they are
homeless is good enough. The clients are
assigned lockers and may not store large items,
or carts of any type at the shelter. The
homeless are expected to help maintain the
facility and may be assigned chores.
The shelter
is always in need of help from the community to
support this very gratifying work. Areas in
which we need help are;
Organizing classes to expand the clients
knowledge base and keep them busy.
Supplying food items or meals.
Donating towels, paper products, or personal
hygiene products.
Providing new or used PJs for the homeless to
sleep in.
Subscriptions to newspapers or magazines.
Services including landscaping, pest control,
handyman services etc.
