The year 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of Community Action and the War Against Poverty

The year 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of Community Action and the War Against Poverty. It's hard to imagine that it was 50 years ago this Wednesday. On January 8, 1964 President Johnson announced: "This nation, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty."

Like many of you, I am eagerly awaiting the celebrations in honor of all of Community Action's success over the past 5 decades. I receive quite a few inquiries every month from writers, journalists and historians inquiring about some aspect of our history. They all marvel at the fact that despite so much presidential opposition and re-shifting, public sentiments about waging war against poverty, we, Community Action, are still here and going strong! We are still strong because the needs and voices of the poor are still paramount in all that we do.

2014 will truly be a year of celebration, not only looking at our 50 years of success, but ahead to 50 more years of responding to the needs of our community. Welcome 2014!
